2023 Petit Lot Chardonnay

“A very attractive and flashy nose with mineral notes of flint and granite underlined by aromas of lemon peel, salt brine, lemon blossoms and lime curd. The palate is medium-bodied, energetic acidity giving notes of grapefruit pith and ocean spray. Wonderfully complex with high tension that will unravel gracefully in bottle. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
96/100 Ryan Montgomery, James Suckling
Aromatically, the wine leads with white peach and salted cashew, juniper and shaved fennel, white pepper and vanilla wafer. On the palate, it is saline and salty, with toasted oak and gentle white fruit, a penetrating score of acidity, as is the calling card for this wine, and a flow of flavor that does not stop once the wine has gone. It’s precise, almost piercing in its intensity. I love this wine, perhaps even more than the 2019 and the 2021, both of which I adored. 96/100 Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate
This complex Chardonnay combines power with restraint and elegance. Produced from our two more mineral based sites, Violette’s and Lucas’ blocks four clones of Chardonnay have been planted to bring complex layers and interest from the vineyard and capture the site. The fruit’s integrity has remained intact with subtle secondary notes of poached pear and flint merely complementing the vibrant aromas of white nectarine, grapefruit and curry leaf. On the palate this wine leaves no doubt of its intentions – it is intense and textural, yet fresh and lively, finding the perfect balance between richness and finesse. Its fine acid backbone carries the exotic stone fruit, poached pear cashew and crème brûlée characters to an exceptionally long finish, showcasing the wines purity. A moreish and sophisticated Chardonnay, which is just an infant at this stage and will generously reward even short-term cellaring.
