“A harmonious blend of 58/20/12/10% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/malbec/petit verdot. An enticing dark garnet hue moving onto wonderful aromas of violets, warm earth and tar, cassis and just-ripe mulberries, a sprinkling of fresh herbs plus loads of spices and some ironstone, too. A lot going on yet mid-weighted, with fine, powdery tannins working in tandem with bright acidity. Showing off a vibrancy of youth, so it’s rather gorgeous now but will garner more complexity with time.” 96/100 Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 12% Malbec, 10% Petit Verdot. The dry farmed vines were planted in 1999 on a small ridge with the soil comprising of gravelly loam adjacent to our oldest Cabernet vines. The vines are planted in a North South row orientation allowing for optimal sunlight and ripening time. Each year Chris cane prunes the vines to ensure that the vine and crops are balanced. The fruit was handpicked on different dates from some of our oldest vines. The grapes were sorted, crushed and destemmed, and then inoculated for fermentation in 1000 litre open fermenters, which were regularly and manually plunged. The wine was gently pressed off using our traditional hand-operated basket press, and then racked to French barriques for 15 months of maturation prior to bottling. This wines was previously dominant in Cabernet Franc however this was grafted over to a specific clone of Cabernet Sauvignon that has shone on our vineyard. As a result it brings a lifted bouquet of dark berries and leaves a rich and lingering flavour on the palate with a beautiful texture from the Cabernet’s tannin profile. A refined and elegant wine this wine is drinking beautifully now, but will also reward cellaring for 10+ years.
